"Waldemar Chorążyczewski, Professor Bohdan Ryszewski — profi le of an academic. Professor
Bohdan Ryszewski was born on 9 September 1934 in Włocławek, where he graduated from Ziemi
Kujawskiej High School (1954). He studied history at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
(NCU, Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika); his MA thesis — “Casimir II the Just’s Involvement in
Russian Affairs” — was written under the direction of Professor Bronisław Włodarski. Following
his graduation, Bohdan Ryszewski worked at the State Archives in Kielce (1958), and later at
Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, at the Department of Archives and Auxiliary Sciences
of History (1966). Four years later (1970), he defended his doctoral thesis in archival theory. He
was the director of the Central Library of NCU in years 1974–1986. In 1984 he was awarded
a postdoctoral degree in the fi eld of archiving and information science at NCU. Between 1987
and 1994, he held the position of Deputy Director of the Institute (and of its Director in 1990);
in 1990–1995 he was the head of Postgraduate Archival Studies at NCU and, fi nally, between
1992 and 1998, he headed the Department of Archives at the Institute of History and Archives,
NCU. In 1995, Bohdan Ryszewski was awarded full professorship. Since 1997 (and since 1998 on
a permanent basis), he has worked for the Pedagogical University in Olsztyn, later transformed into
the University of Warmia and Mazury."
