"Stephen Harwood, Photographic Techniques of the 19th and Early 20th c. — Introduction to the
Issue. The invention of photography in the mid 19th c. was the outcome of numerous experiments and
observations on the influence of light upon photosensitive chemical substances. The discoveries of
Niecephor Niepce, William Henry Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre in the 19th c. gave the beginning to
modern photography. Before modern photographic techniques were developed, many different techniques
had been used and it is necessary to be able to identify them properly to ensure proper storage
and exhibition conditions for historical photographs.
The article includes descriptions of particular photographic techniques and their identification
methods. It represents a photography development timeline from photogenic images through
daguereotype, calotype, salted paper, cyanotype, wet collodion, albumin prints, ambrotype, ferrotype,
platinotype, carbon prints, gelatin glass negative plates, collodion prints, to gelatin silver prints.
Instructions concerning the identification of various photographic processes will be helpful for describing
photographic archival materials, allowing for the use of proper preservation methods."
